Although there are a plethora of negative things that do happen when encountering with guests, there are also lots of wonderful things that will put a smile on your face. These just seem a little harder to come by, almost like a needle in a haystack. The opportunity to help out families in need and make people smile is what makes this job really rewarding in my own eyes. For example, one night I had a woman come to the hotel from Stanford hospital with her very ill son, I was not able to accommodate them at my property. However I was able to use my knowledge of hotels in the area to find a room for them, the look on their face when I said I had someone on the phone ready to book that room was priceless. Such an overjoyed look from an otherwise miserable looking child, made me feel so happy that I was able to, even just for a brief moment, help that child smile knowing they would have a nice comfy bed that wasn't in a hospital to sleep in. These encounters do not happen as often as I would like though, more so because I work at a hotel catered to business travelers.
