QLDC's parks and reserves department also need a pat on the back for their work. Attention is now being turned to the towns river margins and how they can be better integrated into the town. Then there are our tracks both walking and biking, which quickly transport you into the wilderness areas of the Mahu Wheneua land that borders the town or follows the Arrow River to the Gibbston valley wineries. Many of these were formed by volunteers. The eclectic range of businesses, excellent bars and cafes and flourishing art and music scene also adds to the town's attractiveness. Residents take pride in how Arrowtown looks with its unique blend of old and new, surrounded at close quarters by the natural world. Individual properties are a sense of pride with their beautiful gardens. Community and business groups have played a vital role over the last 40 years as Arrowtown has changed from being a small rural service town to a vibrant diverse community with a focus on tourism. Community planning workshops have seen the development of CBD landscaping projects and important tools like the Arrowtown Design Guidelines to support sympathetic development in the town's historic zones. Cherished heritage buildings have been saved and repurposed adding significantly to the town's amenity. In 2018, Arrowtown was given special Landmarks Whenua Heritage status because of its significance to the country and the visitor experience offered. The town's heritage lighting project has contributed significantly to night time ambiance and groups like the Arrowtown Horticultural society maintain the beautiful Buckingham St planter boxes and heritage roses.
What a fantastic result being crowned most beautiful small town in New Zealand! Of course all of us who live and work here already knew that. The judges must ha... ve been completely wowed when they judged the town on a glorious spring day. Arrowtown has the benefit of the sheer natural beauty of its location, nestled beside the Arrow river out of the prevailing winds. Our forefathers recognized the importance of creating amenity with the planting of magnificent avenues of trees and providing green spaces throughout the town. This work has been enhanced over the last 160 years. Beauty comes in many forms in Arrowtown, all of which contribute in some way. The judges emphasis this year was on sustainability and we certainly have a good story to sell in that space with groups involved in wilding pine control, predator trapping, recycling and re-vegetation projects. The enhanced native bird life is already evident. But behind everything is a strong sense of community and the desire to volunteer.
