There's a huge variety of trails—groomed, ski-set, or just marked—taking off right from camp, including gentle tours to places like Inspiration Point and Cascade Lake. Among my favorite moments were the intermittent thunder of the Yellowstone's Lower Falls (much higher than Niagara); walking around Washburn Hot Springs (it's a map-and-compass trip in); watching a park ranger skate at dusk beside the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, just after a grooming machine came through; learning the differences between fisher and coyote tracks; digging a snow pit for evaluating avalanche potential; and the pleasure of a heated outhouse.

Yellowstone National Park in Winter Wintertime at Yellowstone National Park is a magical experience. This snowy season opens up many new possibilities for adventure and exploration. Two quality lodges are open at the park in the winter. The Old Faithful Snow Lodge & Cabins and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel both have terrific winter packages, combining recreation with outstanding accommodations and amenities. Each lodge provides unique winter options designed for visitors who love the outdoors. There are interpretive sightseeing tours, equipment rentals, lessons, and rejuvenating services offered at both locations. There are two local roads plowed and open to automobiles in the winter. The only road leading into Yellowstone National Park is State Route 212 from the north entrance leading through the Mammoth Hot Springs area out to the northeast entrance and Cooke City, Montana. Over-snow vehicles are required to get beyond Cooke City. Also, the section of Highway 191 passing along the west side of the park is open to vehicles, but there is no entrance access.

Winter in Yellowstone offers a more intimate experience, fascinating snowy landscapes, frosty animals, and two lodging facilities that will keep you plenty warm when it's time to turn in for the night. Yellowstone National Park is an authentic American experience, which should keep every guest and visitor deeply engaged and spending time exploring the park. With this in mind, we do not have televisions or radios in the rooms or cabins, but telephones are available in most hotel and lodge rooms. Cabins do not have telephones. Wheelchair accessible accommodations are available. Please note that all park accommodations are non-smoking. Winter Weather Severe winter weather can occasionally cause the National Park Service to temporarily close park entrances and/or roads.
