Do those of you with ongoing PCS consider yourself disabled? I ask because this is a part of my identity I have a hard time grappling, and I'm curious to hear other people's perspectives. tldr at the end:) Of course there's a lot of variability in PCS symptoms, severity, and the way people define disability. I'm fortunate in that the first year after my injury, I was still in high school, so it wasn't a huge deal that I was stuck in bed hardly functioning and I never had to deal with work related "qualifying for disability" stuff. Still, it came as a shock to me when my doctor told me to apply for the disabled students program upon entering college. I can't be disabled, was my visceral reaction, despite very much needing the disabled students services to succeed. Part of the reason I feel weird about calling myself disabled is because in the past (this is changing, fortunately) the word has had such a negative connotation; in identifying as disabled I place myself in a category of otherness, and I so desperately want my old life back, to live like a normal person again, that using the word disability feels like defeat.
