If you go on a Sunday between 10am and 4pm (from May 2018) you can walk up to the lighthouse and take advantage of the café. It's a beautiful walk with lovely views over the water in all directions. Look out for the seal and pods of dolphins (and whales in migration season). And remember you have to walk all the way to the end for it to count. Top Tip: Walk back along the sand! 6 – Walk from Honeysuckle along the river to The Kiosk Newcastle Beach Pick a point on Honeysuckle – the vibrant waterfront area of Newy where the city meets the harbour and waterfront. Then walk along the river to Nobbys Beach, and follow the path all the way around to Newcastle Beach. It is one of the best walks in the area, and The Kiosk Newcastle Beach is a great spot to stop for some refreshments and people watching. It has since become a popular hangout among families and surfers. Soft white sand formation. Today, you'll find a soft white sand bank lining sparkling seawater. It's the ideal setting to unwind and enjoy a cool, refreshing splash among the waves. There is plenty of space. Choose a spot to set up on for the day. Relax with conveniences right beside the beach - amenities block, free BBQs, kiosk. Nothing like good old chips on the beach. If you feel breaking up your day, there are also some sites of interest next to Nobbys. Just to the north you'll find Nobbys Lighthouse. Check this out along with the view back over the beach. To the south you'll find a series of ocean baths, including the Historic Soldier's Baths Rock Pool. Southern end of the beach. If you're into surfing, this is quite a hotspot for reef-based spots. As Nobbys is Newcastle's highest profile beach, it is patrolled Mondays to Saturdays year-round (and Sundays during swim season).
Beaches [ edit] Newcastle East is home to two of Newcastle's beaches, Nobbys Beach and Newcastle Beach, both of which have surf lifesaving clubs and are patrolled by lifesavers. In June 2007, the bulk carrier MV Pasha Bulker grounded itself off Nobbys Beach in a storm. Between Newcastle and Nobbys beaches lie the Newcastle Ocean Baths. Fort Scratchley [ edit] Fort Scratchley is a fort atop a knoll overlooking Nobbys Beach. It was designed by Lt. Col. Peter Scratchley and built between 1881 and 1886. While its original purpose was to protect the colony against a feared Russian invasion, its most prominent role came during World War II when the guns at the fort fired upon a Japanese submarine which shelled the city in 1942. The military role of the fort came to an end in 1972 and it now houses the Newcastle Region Maritime and Military Museum. [4] Damage from the Japanese Navy attack during World War II can still be seen on the front of some of the buildings in East End. Today Fort Scratchley is a visitor attraction with views of the city and coastline, displays of military artefacts, and tunnel tours.
