The rocky peninsula is better known for the Welsh patron saint of lovers and the holy church and well which can be seen on the island. It became a pilgrimage destination, with visitors leaving offerings at the shrine of St Dwynwen. The Island's Lighthouse is equally as interesting as the myths surrounding the destination, first built in 1976, the beacon of light warned sailors of the hidden rocks of the peninsula. Standing at relatively small 10 meters and boosting an unusual rounded shape, the setting is picture-perfect. Bring along a lunch and spend some time admiring the incredible views! Mumbles Lighthouse Built in 1794 to lead vessels safety along the Swansea Bay, the captivating beacon structure guided ships and their crew past the traitorous Mixon Sands and Cherry Stone Rock. The octagonal two-stage tower reaches an impressive 17 meters high while standing proudly 35 meters above the sea level. The angular shape makes the structure appear much younger than those of a similar age, yet the history of the engine room says otherwise. Originally, the lighthouse had a coal-fired light, in 1799 this was replaced with an oil lantern and then later in 1934, an automatic light was fitted, and the final keeper retired.

During storms, the lapping waves can be sighted from the comfort of indoors, while on a calm day, the views out to sea can seem to go on for miles. The historic St Ann's Head Lighthouse was first built in 1714, making it over 300 years old. The dramatic headland surrounding, with stunning rocky cliffs and an embracing sea, makes this the ultimate holiday destination. What makes this lighthouse even more unique is that it is available for guests to come and stay in! The incredible views can be admired from all four levels and with a pool, sauna and table football, there is a lot to keep visitors amused. Point of Ayr Lighthouse The oldest lighthouse on the Welsh shores, Point of Ayr is steeped in history and legend. Built in 1776 and situated on Talacre beach, west of the mouth of the River Dee, the lighthouse demands the eye's attention upon approach. The original building was constructed in 1776, yet this was damaged by the sea during a ferocious storm in 1818, to later be replaced in 1820 with the structure that remains today.
The lighthouse is a low castellated structure painted white with the round lens room connected to the seaward side of the building. The station is fully automated, the power source being electric, and is backed up by standby generators which cut in should the mains power fail. There was also an automatic fog detector which used to start the fog signal should the visibility drop to less than 2½ miles, which has recently been turned off.
